DJ AM's Death Most Likely Due to Crack Cocaine and Xanax

Law enforcement sources directly connected with the death of DJ AM (born Adam Goldstein) told TMZ.com that his death was the result of an accidental overdose and not suicide. When police discovered his body in his apartment, a bag of crack cocaine was found on him and a glass crack pipe was found in his bedroom.

Sources say that DJ AM, a recovering addict, developed a dependency to Xanax and other benzodiazepines (sedative drugs used to treat anxiety) after being one of the only two survivors of a plane crash last September. The sources said AM developed a tremendous anxiety about flying—something he had to do often for his job as a disk jockey.

Doctors apparently began prescribing him Xanax and other anti-anxiety medications to relieve his fear, but the benzos triggered a relapse into addiction. The sources say AM’s relapse was recent, as he was not abusing for about ten years before his death.

The sources also said that AM’s death had “nothing to do” with his recent breakup with girlfriend Hayley Wood, and that evidence strongly suggests the cause of death was a combination of crack cocaine and benzos.
